Exposição Fotográfica
Photo Exhibition
A photo exhibition around the theme Longing for Brazil was organized at the Restaurante Cachalote in Miaí de Cima, Coruripe, AL.
It comprised a collection of photographs taken by Claude Lévi-Strauss, in Brazil, between 1935 and 1939, a period of ethnographic research that resulted in the "Tristes Trópicos", commented, nowadays, by the author.
Lévi-Strauss repassed to "Tristes Trópicos" the narrative of his expeditions among Indian tribes in the South of the Amazon and Mato Grosso regions. The author doesn't consider them "primitive"; instead he defines them as the survivors of ancient cultures, escaping the destruction brought forth by Europeans, mixing analysis and remorse, episodes and philosophical questions.
The images, in this unique experience, parade in Longing for Brazil escorted by a hurtful nostalgia for a world coming to an end. Meantime, warns Lévi-Strauss, the time has come for western civilization, a victim of itself, to feel threatened. Becoming Indians ourselves, we are about to do to ourselves what was done to the Bororós and Nhambiquara tribes.
